I use the phenomenological writings of Merleau-Ponty & Heidegger primarily to study embodiment after spinal cord injury and the experience of being en-wheeled.

Phenomenology is the study of structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view. The central structure of an experience is its intentionality, its being directed toward something, as it is an experience of or about some object. An experience is directed toward an object by virtue of its content or meaning (which represents the object) together with appropriate enabling conditions.
Phenomenology as a discipline is distinct from but related to other key disciplines in philosophy, such as ontology, epistemology, logic, and ethics. Phenomenology has been practiced in various guises for centuries, but it came into its own in the early 20th century in the works of Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty and others. Peer Support  Interventions

Funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), Dr. Susan Magasi and I worked with clinical and community partners to develop a peer support intervention called OP-ENS (Our Peers—Empowerment and Navigational Support) to improve healthcare access for persons with physical disabilities in the greater Chicago area.

Shared Decision-Making in Medical Rehabilitation

With a team of diverse rehabilitation practitioners, care partners, and researchers, we study shared decision-making (SDM) for persons who cannot advocate for their needs such as those in disordered states of consciousness. We are developing a relationship-centric model of SDM for medical rehab.

Disorders of Consciousness & Medical Rehabilitation

With a team of diverse rehabilitation practitioners, care partners, and researchers, we study stakeholders who care for persons in disordered states of consciousness (DOC) after traumatic brain injury. Specifically, we want to understand how these practitioners and care partners make sense of the ambiguity and uncertainty that surrounds the diagnosis and treatment of DOC in order to develop better clinical measurements that can detect meaningful change and support improved shared decision-making.

Person-Centered Care in Medical Rehabilitation

With a team of international scholars, we conducted a scoping review of the person-centered literature in medical rehabilitation and developed a model for person centered rehabilitation. I have also worked with empirical data to understand person-centered practices. Read the publications below.
